When you start looking into pet insurance, you quickly realize they all promise the same basic thing: flexible coverage, easy claims, peace of mind. The reality, of course, can vary quite a bit.
MetLife Pet Insurance is one of those names that already feels familiar (they’ve been around forever on the human side), which naturally raises expectations. So, the question is, does their pet insurance actually hold up once you dig into the details?
I went through the full process—from exploring coverage options to getting a quote—so you can see exactly how it works, what it covers, and what you can realistically expect before you commit.
Flexible, budget-friendly plans with customizable coverage and solid perks like 24/7 vet access.

Why Choose MetLife Pet Insurance?
MetLife brings a level of name recognition that a lot of pet insurance companies simply don’t have. That doesn’t automatically make it better, but it does mean they’re not new to the whole “insurance” thing.
Here are a few reasons it tends to stand out:
Flexible Coverage That’s Actually Customizable
MetLife gives you a lot of control over your plan—deductibles, reimbursement rates, and annual limits can all be adjusted, so you’re not stuck with a one-size-fits-all policy.
Covers More Than Just the Basics
Beyond accidents and illnesses, MetLife policies can include things like hereditary conditions, chronic issues, and even some alternative treatments depending on your plan.
Family Plans for Multiple Pets
Instead of juggling separate policies, MetLife offers a family-style plan option that can cover multiple pets under one umbrella (which is surprisingly rare and genuinely useful).
No Breed Restrictions
Some providers quietly limit coverage for certain breeds. MetLife doesn’t play that game. Coverage isn’t reduced just because of breed-related risks.
Workplace Benefit Option
If your employer offers MetLife pet insurance as a benefit, you may get discounted rates (worth checking before you buy anything on your own).
Quick Online Quote Process
Getting a quote is straightforward and doesn’t feel like you’re signing your life away just to see a number. It’s fast, clean, and easy to tweak.
Pros and Cons
Here’s a clear side-by-side look:
✔ Pros
- Highly customizable plans
- Covers accidents, illnesses, chronic and hereditary conditions
- No breed-based exclusions
- Family plan option for multiple pets
- Optional wellness add-ons available
- Easy, fast online quote process
- May offer employer-based discounts
- Access to any licensed vet nationwide
✖ Cons
- No coverage for pre-existing conditions
- Wellness coverage costs extra
- Pricing varies significantly by pet profile
- Policy details can feel a bit dense at first glance
What’s Covered? Comprehensive (and Pretty Straightforward)
One thing MetLife does well is laying out coverage in a way that doesn’t feel intentionally confusing. You still need to read the fine print (because…insurance), but the core coverage is solid.
✔ Accident and Illness Coverage
Covers injuries, infections, and unexpected health issues—basically the big-ticket vet visits you don’t want to pay out of pocket.
✔ Exam Fees
Unlike some providers that treat exam fees as optional, MetLife can include them depending on your plan.
✔ Prescription Medications
Covered for eligible conditions, which adds up fast if your dog ends up on long-term meds.
✔ Chronic Conditions
Ongoing issues like allergies, arthritis, or diabetes are covered as long as they’re not pre-existing.
✔ Hereditary and Congenital Conditions
Breed-related issues are included, which is a big deal if you have a dog prone to specific health problems.
✔ Cancer Treatment
From diagnosis to treatment, coverage includes serious conditions that would otherwise be financially overwhelming.
✔ Specialist Visits
If your regular vet refers you out, those visits can still be covered.
✔ Alternative Therapies
Things like acupuncture or physical therapy may be included depending on your plan (not universal, but nice to have).
✔ Emergency and After-Hours Care
Late-night ER visits are covered, which is when vet bills tend to get especially painful.
✔ Optional Wellness Coverage
Routine care like vaccines, checkups, and dental cleanings can be added—but it’s not included by default.
How Much Does MetLife Pet Insurance Cost?
As with ALL insurance, your final cost depends on a lot of factors. In this case, your dog’s age, breed, your location, and the optional add-ons that you choose. I’ll walk you through the typical process and options below.
Step One: Fill in Your Dog’s Info
I was going to walk you through the process using Freya, but she’s not exactly a “typical” case. She’s a Pharaoh Hound, so right off the bat she costs more to insure because she’s both purebred and a rare breed. She’s also 9 years old, which puts her in the senior rate category. I figure that’s not going to help most people determine whether MetLife pet insurance is right for them.

So, I went with my girl Maia (pictured above, deep in thought), a lab/collie mix (although I just put mixed and they asked about her weight instead of her breeds). I made her age 3. She was roughly 65 lbs. in her prime (which puts her in the medium range on MetLife) and relatively healthy since she lived to be almost 15.

Step 2: See your recommended plan
This is one of the things I love most about the MetLife Pet Insurance process-it doesn’t make you go through page after page after page of questions. As soon as you finish page one, it gives you your recommended plan, along with two other options (balanced and high deductible).

If you click on “Compare Plans” you’ll see a nifty little popup that shows you all three side-by-side at once.

You can’t see this in the screenshot, but before you checkout make sure you scroll down a bit. There is a section for Applied Discounts. You’ll save $1 a month by signing up and managing your plan online. They also offer a 10% discount for “serving/retired members of Armed Forces, 1st Responders, Healthcare Workers and staff/owners/volunteers of animal care facilities, including, but not limited to, vet offices, animal shelters and Humane Society.”
At this point, you can either choose the recommended plan and head to checkout, or you can play around some more by customizing it a bit. Let’s give that a try.
Step 3 (Optional): Customize your plan

You can customize your reimbursement rate (70-90%), annual limit ($2K-10K) and deductible ($50-500), plus choose an add-on plan. Change one or change them all. Here’s an example of what I’m calling the “maxed out” plan. I picked the highest limits and lowest deductibles, plus the biggest add-on plan. Pretty pricey, right? I love that they show you the cost of the three original plans at the top so you can easily compare them to your own tweaks.
Let’s try something a bit less “maxed out.” Let’s say I still want the max reimbursement, but I’m good with a cap of $5K and a deductible of $250, plus the lower-cost preventative add-on.

Still a good chunk more than the recommended plan, but not terrible. The biggest jump comes from adding on the Preventative 365 option. Before that, it was about $58. Let’s look at that in a bit more detail.
Optional Step 4: Choose a Preventative plan add-on
The Preventive 365 plan added just under $25 to my total monthly cost while the 575 plan added about $38, give or take a few cents on each. If you click the “see what’s covered” link, you’ll get a popup like this:

Those dollar amounts in the second through 4th column gives you the maximum amount that they’ll reimburse you for each service. IF you use every single benefit, then paying for the add-on saves you about $65 a year with the 365 option and $119 a year with the 575 option. I think it’s worth it for the first year for sure.
Comparing Prices for Different Breeds and Ages
Before we head into my final thoughts, I figured it may be helpful to see quotes for a few different breeds and ages. Each of these is the monthly cost for the recommended plan. All are female.
- 9-year-old Pharaoh Hound (Freya)- $136.50
- Golden Retriever, age 5 -$73.33
- Dachshund, age 1- $28.27
- Large Mix Puppy- $58.98
- Medium Mix Puppy- $55.12
- Small Mix Puppy- $42.80
Honestly, the price varies so much depending on your dog’s breed, adult weight range, and age. So, the best way to figure out you cost is to just fill out the form. It takes less than a minute. In fact, it took me less than 5 minutes to pull quotes for all of the above.
Final Thoughts
MetLife Pet Insurance feels like a very “grown-up” option (in a good way, not a boring way). It’s structured, flexible, and clearly built by a company that understands insurance at scale.
What stood out most to me going through the process was how easy it was. It’s really one of the simplest in the pet insurance industry. It took me 10 times longer to write about it than it did to actually go through it. 😀
That said, it’s still insurance. You’ll want to read the details, compare a few scenarios, and make sure the numbers make sense for your specific pet.
If you like the idea of a well-established provider with flexible options—and you don’t mind spending a few extra minutes dialing in your plan—it’s definitely one worth seriously considering.
